Design Concept

Along Jalan Besar, The Hock Bee Brothers Building stands as an architectural gem, existing as a landmark present in the collective spatial memory of every Kuantan resident for half a century. The building sits on two pre-war shoplot blocks, allowing for a 40 foot front façade that features five deeply recessed bays that are rhythmically divided by vertical fins. Interestingly, the front-facing windows are designed to protrude outwards to form geometric prisms. The prismatic window fulfills not only the basic purpose of its role as a fenestration; to light and to ventilate, but it also pragmatically serves as a sculptural object, an unassuming ornament. The timelessness of the careful rhythm and beautiful spacing of the design on The Hock Bee Brothers Building is undisputedly the reason we love it as an important part of Kuantan’s urban history.

The design intent for Ms. Elliot, the new café restaurant that occupies the ground and mezzanine floor, was to stay truthful to the narrative of the building. The building did not need any overtly conspicuous “design,” it already had so much character. In the beginning of 2022, a time capsule was opened. As the building had always been a public place during its life as an office, it was key to keep the building’s circulation and interior workings same as everyone’s collective memory. Originally, a display cabinet existed as a visual focus in the center upon entering the building, and the double height wood louvers divided the public and private realms within the office space. The central visual focus is replaced with a multi-layered onyx installation piece that serves as the reception coffee bar to the new café. The wood louvers are treated and refurbished, serving as the demarcation between the more public anteroom and the semiprivate dining spaces. The original spatial symmetry is further established by the introduction of two thick entryway walls on each side on the room. The entryways bring visitors toward the dining spaces behind the louvered partition on the ground floor, and the mezzanine floor via the stairway.

The reception coffee bar draws rhythmic design cues from the building’s front façade, it is as though a Russian Doll has been taken apart and exploded, remnants suspended in spacetime. Backlit onyx tiles hang on a 4 meter tall steel frame that invites visitors to enter and ponder the space within. The installation is sculptural as it is spatial. The custom pendant lights draw from the prismatic windows on the façade, as well as antique gas streetlights from bygone years. The original mosaic floor is kept as is, the bright red wooden plaque with golden Chinese characters is cleaned of its 50-year grime and refastened to its original location on the west wall, as per the fengshui master’s suggestion.

Through the thick entryway walls, the ceiling compresses and becomes lower. This space once housed high level security office rooms that led to the vault. Now, the spaces are liberated, giving room for cozy dining booths that overlook the anteroom. At the back, two skylights that introduce light and air into the interior spaces opens into a large double height dining hall. Light tubes hang from the ceiling of the dining hall, resembling floating candlelights that follows the central axis of the original layout.

On the mezzanine floor, the original wood slat walls that decorated the offices are restored. A new opening onto the balcony allows visitors to enter the skylight atrium. Three independent dining and lounge spaces are created for more private gatherings.
